Early Life
Lance Havaldar Vijay Kumar was born on 20 August 1981 in Sagwan village of Bhiwani district, Haryana. Raised in a humble family, he grew up with strong values of discipline, hard work, and patriotism. From an early age, he dreamed of serving the nation by wearing the Army uniform.
At the age of 20, he fulfilled that dream by joining the Indian Army on 29 September 2001. He was inducted into the prestigious 23 PARA of the Parachute Regiment, one of the Indian Army's most distinguished infantry regiments. The regiment is renowned for its fearless soldiers, demanding training, and participation in some of the country's most challenging military operations. Serving in such a unit required exceptional physical endurance, mental resilience, and an unwavering commitment to duty, qualities that Vijay Kumar demonstrated throughout his military career.
Service in the Indian Army
During his years of service, Lance Havaldar Vijay Kumar participated in numerous operational deployments across different regions. His professionalism, dedication, and leadership earned him the respect of both his seniors and fellow soldiers.
In 2018, his unit was deployed in South Kashmir, an area that frequently witnessed counterinsurgency operations against heavily armed terrorists. The soldiers of 23 PARA continuously operated under difficult conditions, carrying out intelligence-based operations to prevent terrorist activities and ensure the safety of civilians.
The Shopian Operation
On the night of 19 November 2018, intelligence agencies received specific information about the presence of heavily armed terrorists hiding inside a house in Nadigam village of Shopian district.
Based on the intelligence input, a joint operation was planned involving personnel from 34 Rashtriya Rifles, 23 PARA, and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police. The objective was to cordon off the area, search the suspected house, and prevent the terrorists from escaping.
In the early hours of 20 November 2018, around 2:00 am, the joint team surrounded the target area and launched the search operation. Everything proceeded according to plan until approximately 4:15 am, when the terrorists suddenly attempted to break through the security cordon.
Three terrorists jumped out through a window of the house in a desperate attempt to escape. Reacting instantly, Lance Havaldar Vijay Kumar displayed remarkable courage and presence of mind. Without hesitation, he opened fire and successfully neutralised the first terrorist before he could flee.
The remaining terrorists responded with intense and indiscriminate firing at the security forces. Despite coming under heavy fire, the joint team maintained its position and continued the operation with determination. During the fierce exchange, another terrorist was eliminated.
While engaging the terrorists at close range, Lance Havaldar Vijay Kumar sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Even after being critically injured, his courageous action played a crucial role in preventing the terrorists from escaping and ensured the success of the operation. He was evacuated for medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries, attaining martyrdom in the line of duty.
