Early Life
Nazir Ahmad Wani was born in Cheki Ashmuji village in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Like many young people growing up during the troubled years in the Valley, he witnessed the effects of conflict from an early age. During his youth, he briefly became associated with militancy, but he soon realized the path of violence only brought suffering.
Choosing to rebuild his life, he surrendered and decided to serve society in a meaningful way. His decision marked the beginning of an inspiring journey that would eventually make him one of India's most respected soldiers.
Joining the Indian Army
In 2004, Nazir Ahmad Wani joined the 162 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army), Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. His determination, discipline, and deep understanding of the local terrain quickly made him an asset to the Army.
Over the years, he participated in numerous counter-insurgency operations across Kashmir. His courage under fire, sharp tactical skills, and commitment to protecting innocent lives earned him the respect of his commanding officers and fellow soldiers.
His remarkable performance led to his attachment with the 34 Rashtriya Rifles, where he continued serving in some of the most challenging operational areas of South Kashmir.
For his bravery during anti-terror operations, he was awarded the Sena Medal, and later a Bar to the Sena Medal, recognising repeated acts of gallantry in the line of duty.
The Batagund Operation
On 25 November 2018, security agencies received intelligence about the presence of heavily armed terrorists hiding in Batagund village of Shopian district. Acting on the information, a joint operation was launched by the 34 Rashtriya Rifles, along with personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani was among the soldiers leading the operation.
As the security forces closed in on the target, the terrorists opened intense automatic fire and hurled grenades in an attempt to escape the cordon. Despite the heavy resistance, Wani displayed exceptional courage and advanced towards the terrorists.
During the fierce encounter, he successfully neutralised one terrorist at close range. Even after suffering serious gunshot injuries, he refused to withdraw from the battlefield. Ignoring his own wounds, he continued the assault and eliminated another terrorist, helping his team gain control of the situation.
His fearless actions played a crucial role in the success of the operation and prevented the terrorists from breaking the security cordon.
However, the injuries he sustained during the encounter proved fatal. Despite every effort to save him, Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani succumbed to his injuries while serving the nation.
Ashoka Chakra
In recognition of his extraordinary courage, selfless devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice, the Government of India posthumously awarded Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani the Ashoka Chakra, the country's highest peacetime gallantry award.
His bravery reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army and demonstrated the courage expected of a soldier who placed the nation's security above his own life.
