Major Aashish Dhonchak, Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous)

The Indian Army has always been defined by officers who lead from the front, placing the safety of their men and the nation above their own lives. Major Aashish Dhonchak was one such fearless officer whose courage, leadership and unwavering commitment to duty earned him everlasting respect.

Born on 23 October 1987 in Binjhol village of Panipat district, Haryana, Major Aashish Dhonchak nurtured a dream of serving the nation from a young age. After joining the Indian Army in 2012, he was commissioned into the 15 Sikh Light Infantry. Throughout his military career, he served with distinction in several operational areas before being deputed to the 19 Rashtriya Rifles, where he took part in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

On 13 September 2023, Major Aashish Dhonchak was leading a counter-terrorism operation in the dense forests of Gadol, Kokernag in Anantnag district following intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists. During the operation, the security forces came under heavy and accurate fire from well-concealed terrorists.

Displaying exceptional courage and calm under intense pressure, Major Dhonchak led his team from the front, directing the operation while engaging the terrorists. Despite sustaining serious injuries during the fierce exchange of fire, he continued to fight and motivate his fellow soldiers, ensuring the operation continued without losing momentum.

While performing his duty with extraordinary bravery, Major Aashish Dhonchak made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. His martyrdom was a profound loss to the Indian Army, but his courage and leadership remain an enduring inspiration for every soldier who wears the uniform.

In recognition of his exceptional gallantry, devotion to duty and selfless service, Major Aashish Dhonchak was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India's highest peacetime gallantry awards.

He is survived by his parents, his wife and his daughter. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he inspired and the values he upheld. The nation will forever remember him as a courageous officer who led from the front and gave everything in defence of India.
