Major Anuj Sood, Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous)

The Indian Army is defined by officers who lead from the front, inspiring their men through courage, determination and selfless service. Major Anuj Sood was one such outstanding officer whose unwavering commitment to duty and extraordinary bravery earned him a place among India's finest military heroes.


Born on 17 December 1989 in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, Major Anuj Sood grew up in a family with a strong military background. Inspired by the values of discipline, honour and patriotism, he fulfilled his dream of joining the Indian Army and was commissioned into the 19 Brigade of the Guards in 2012. During his career, he served in several operational areas before being deputed to the 21 Rashtriya Rifles, where he took part in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

On 2 May 2020, Major Anuj Sood was part of a counter-terrorism operation in Handwara in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces had received information that terrorists had taken civilians hostage inside a house. Demonstrating exceptional courage, Major Sood volunteered for the rescue mission and led his team into the danger zone to save innocent lives.

Despite coming under heavy terrorist fire, he displayed remarkable composure and determination, ensuring the safe evacuation of the trapped civilians before engaging the terrorists in a fierce gun battle. Even after sustaining critical injuries, he continued to fight with unwavering resolve, setting an extraordinary example of leadership and devotion to duty.
While performing his mission with exceptional gallantry, Major Anuj Sood made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. His courage and selfless actions reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army and inspired everyone who served alongside him.

In recognition of his exceptional bravery, indomitable leadership and devotion to duty, Major Anuj Sood was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India's highest peacetime gallantry awards.

He is survived by his wife, parents and family, who continue to cherish his legacy with pride. The nation remembers him as a fearless officer who placed the safety of others above his own life and upheld the honour of the Indian Army until his final breath.
