Major Kamlesh Pandey was a courageous officer of the Indian Army whose life was defined by selfless service, unwavering commitment, and exceptional leadership. A native of Dugoli village in Haldwani district, Uttarakhand, he was the son of Sri Bhuvan Chand Pandey. His journey in uniform began with his selection as an Airman in the Indian Air Force, before he chose to pursue a commission in the Indian Army, where he continued his distinguished service to the nation.
After serving with his parent regiment, Major Kamlesh Pandey was deputed to the 62 Rashtriya Rifles, a unit actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir. Known for his professionalism and fearless spirit, he regularly led operations against terrorists in the challenging terrain of the Kashmir Valley.
On the night of 2 August 2017, security forces received credible intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the Zaipora area of Shopian district. Acting swiftly, the Indian Army launched a search and cordon operation to neutralize the threat. Major Kamlesh Pandey led the assault team into the operation with determination and confidence.
In the early hours of 3 August 2017, as the search operation progressed, the troops came under heavy terrorist fire from concealed positions. A fierce encounter followed, with both sides exchanging intense gunfire. Displaying remarkable courage, Major Kamlesh Pandey continued to lead his men from the front despite the grave danger.
During the encounter, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including serious injuries to his neck and lungs. He was immediately evacuated to the Army's 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar for advanced medical treatment. Despite the best efforts to save him, Major Kamlesh Pandey succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital, making the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
Major Kamlesh Pandey's courage, leadership, and unwavering devotion to duty remain a shining example of the highest traditions of the Indian Army. His sacrifice continues to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike, reminding the nation of the extraordinary bravery displayed by those who stand guard to protect its sovereignty.
