Paratrooper Imtiyaz Ahmad Thoker was a fearless warrior of the 1 PARA (Special Forces) and a proud son of Shadab Karewa, Shopian, Jammu & Kashmir. His life was defined by courage, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the service of the nation. Before joining the Indian Army, he briefly served with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Determined to fulfil his dream of serving in one of the Army's most elite fighting units, he later joined the Parachute Regiment and earned the coveted maroon beret of 1 PARA (Special Forces) through exceptional dedication and rigorous training.
On 22 February 2010, security forces received intelligence about the presence of heavily armed terrorists hiding in Chinkipora, Sopore. Acting swiftly on the information, a counter-terrorism operation was launched to neutralise the threat. The mission demanded extraordinary courage, precision, and teamwork as the terrorists had taken strategic positions and were prepared to engage the security forces.
As the operation progressed into the early hours of 23 February 2010, the assault team came under intense terrorist fire, leading to a fierce and prolonged gun battle. Displaying exceptional bravery and remarkable composure under fire, Paratrooper Imtiyaz Ahmad Thoker fought fearlessly alongside his comrades. Despite the grave danger, he continued to engage the terrorists with determination, refusing to retreat while carrying out his mission.
During the fierce exchange of fire, he sustained critical injuries while leading the assault. Even after being wounded, he continued fighting with unwavering resolve until he ultimately made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. His courage and selfless devotion to the nation reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army and the Special Forces.
In recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, indomitable spirit, and devotion to duty beyond the call of duty, Paratrooper Imtiyaz Ahmad Thoker was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal. The prestigious gallantry award stands as a tribute to his extraordinary bravery and the ultimate sacrifice he made in defence of the nation.
His legacy continues to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike. To honour his supreme sacrifice and preserve his memory for future generations, the Government Degree College, Shopian, was renamed Government Imtiyaz Memorial Degree College, Shopian. The institution stands as a lasting reminder of a brave son of Kashmir whose courage and patriotism continue to inspire young minds.
