The strength of the Indian Army lies in the courage and selfless commitment of its soldiers who stand ready to defend the nation under the most difficult circumstances. Sepoy Hetram Godara was one such braveheart whose devotion to duty and fearless spirit continue to inspire every Indian.
Born in Sonigasar Godara village of Bikaner district, Rajasthan, Sepoy Hetram Godara joined the Indian Army in 2013 with a deep sense of patriotism and dedication to national service. During his military career, he served in different operational areas before being deputed to the 34 Rashtriya Rifles (34 RR) for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
On the night of 31 March 2018, security agencies received credible intelligence regarding the presence of heavily armed terrorists hiding in Kachedoora village of Shopian district. Acting swiftly, a joint team comprising personnel of 34 Rashtriya Rifles, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the CRPF launched a carefully planned cordon-and-search operation.
As the security forces closed in on the suspected location, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire, triggering a prolonged encounter. Despite the danger, the soldiers held their positions and responded with determination. After several hours of fierce exchange of fire, the assault team advanced towards the house where the terrorists had taken shelter. The operation demanded exceptional courage as the terrorists were firing from well-fortified positions inside the building.
The soldiers of 34 Rashtriya Rifles pressed forward with remarkable bravery, eventually eliminating four terrorists and bringing the operation to a successful conclusion on 1 April 2018. During the intense battle, Sepoy Hetram Godara, Gunner Nilesh Singh, and Gunner Arvinder Kumar sustained critical injuries. Although they were evacuated for medical treatment, all three brave soldiers later succumbed to their injuries, making the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
Sepoy Hetram Godara's courage, unwavering commitment to duty and selfless sacrifice remain a shining example of the values upheld by the Indian Army. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of soldiers and citizens alike.
He is survived by his wife, Sundri, while the nation remembers him with deep respect and eternal gratitude.
