At the young age of 23, he laid down his life while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, displaying extraordinary bravery in the face of grave danger. Early Life
Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan hailed from Shigav village in Maharashtra's Sangli district. Born into a humble family, he was the son of Shri Tanaji Chavan and grew up alongside his younger sister. From an early age, Romit was known for his disciplined nature, determination, and deep sense of patriotism. Like many young men from rural India who dream of serving the nation, he aspired to wear the olive green uniform of the Indian Army.
After completing his schooling, he achieved that dream by joining the Army on 17 March 2017, when he was just 18 years old. His decision brought immense pride to his family and his village, marking the beginning of a journey dedicated to the service of the nation.
Joining the Mahar Regiment
Following his successful completion of military training, Sepoy Romit was inducted into the 4 Mahar Battalion of the Mahar Regiment, one of the Indian Army's renowned infantry regiments. The Mahar Regiment has a proud history of courage, discipline, and distinguished service in numerous military operations across the country.
During his service with the battalion, Romit quickly earned the trust of his seniors through his professionalism, commitment, and willingness to undertake challenging tasks. His dedication eventually led to his deputation with the 1 Rashtriya Rifles (1 RR), a counter-insurgency force deployed in Jammu and Kashmir. Serving in Rashtriya Rifles demanded exceptional courage, as its personnel regularly operated in hostile and unpredictable environments while combating terrorism.
Counter-Insurgency Duties in Jammu and Kashmir
By early 2022, Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan was serving with 1 Rashtriya Rifles in Shopian district, one of the sensitive regions of South Kashmir. The unit remained on constant operational alert because of the presence of active terrorists in its area of responsibility. Intelligence-based operations, cordon-and-search missions, and encounters with militants were a routine part of the soldiers' lives.
Every operation carried immense risk. The troops not only had to neutralize terrorists but also ensure the safety of innocent civilians living in the conflict zone. This balance demanded patience, tactical skill, and immense courage.
The Shopian Operation – 19 February 2022
On 19 February 2022, security agencies received credible intelligence about the presence of heavily armed terrorists hiding in the Tsermarg (Chreymarg) area of Shopian district. Acting swiftly, a joint counter-terrorism operation was planned.
The operation involved personnel from the Indian Army's 1 Rashtriya Rifles, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police. Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan was among the soldiers selected for the mission.
In the early hours of the morning, the joint team reached the suspected location and established a cordon around the area. As the security forces closed in, the hiding terrorists suddenly opened heavy automatic fire from inside a house.
The sudden burst of firing created an extremely dangerous situation because several civilians, including women and children, were present nearby. Despite the risk to their own lives, the soldiers first focused on evacuating the civilians to safety before fully engaging the terrorists. Their quick action prevented what could have been a tragic loss of innocent lives.
Once the civilians were secured, the security forces launched a determined assault against the terrorists. The exchange of fire became intense and continued for several hours. The troops advanced carefully, attempting to eliminate the terrorists while avoiding collateral damage to nearby homes and civilians.
During the fierce encounter, Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan fought fearlessly alongside his comrades. The troops successfully eliminated one terrorist and continued pressing the operation against the remaining militants.
However, amid the heavy exchange of fire, Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan and Sepoy Santosh Yadav sustained critical gunshot injuries while bravely engaging the terrorists. Despite all efforts to save them, both soldiers later succumbed to their injuries.
At just 23 years of age, Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, placing the safety of the nation and its people above his own life.
Gallantry Award
In recognition of his exceptional courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice during the Shopian operation, the Government of India honoured Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan with the Sena Medal (Posthumous).
The award stands as a lasting tribute to his bravery and reflects the highest traditions of the Indian Army, where courage, selflessness, and commitment to the nation remain above everything else.
Legacy
Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan is survived by his father Shri Tanaji Chavan, his mother, and his younger sister. Although his life was tragically cut short, his sacrifice continues to inspire countless young Indians who aspire to serve the nation.
His story reminds us that peace and security are protected by soldiers who willingly place themselves in harm's way so that others may live without fear. Every operation in the challenging terrain of Jammu and Kashmir demands extraordinary courage, and Sepoy Romit's actions during the Shopian encounter reflected the finest traditions of the Indian Army.
