Sepoy Santosh Yadav, SM (Posthumous): A Soldier Who Gave Everything for the Nation

The story of Sepoy Santosh Yadav is one of courage, dedication, and selfless service. A brave son of Uttar Pradesh, he devoted his youth to the Indian Army and ultimately laid down his life while protecting the nation during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. His unwavering commitment to duty and exceptional gallantry earned him the Sena Medal (Posthumous), ensuring that his sacrifice will always be remembered.

Early Life

Sepoy Santosh Yadav was born in Tadva village of Rudrapur tehsil in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh. He was the son of Shri Sheshnath Yadav and Smt. Maina Devi. Growing up in a humble household, Santosh shared a close bond with his brother and sister and was known for his disciplined nature, hardworking attitude, and strong sense of responsibility.

From a young age, he dreamed of serving the country in uniform. Determined to turn that dream into reality, he completed his schooling and joined the Indian Army in 2011 at the age of just 18 years.

His decision inspired others in the family as well. Motivated by Santosh's dedication and patriotism, his younger brother Manoj Yadav also chose to join the Indian Army, continuing the family's proud tradition of serving the nation.

Service in the Indian Army

After completing his military training, Sepoy Santosh Yadav was inducted into the Mahar Regiment, one of the Indian Army's distinguished infantry regiments. The regiment has earned immense respect for its bravery, professionalism, and remarkable record in numerous military campaigns.

Throughout his service, Santosh built a reputation as a disciplined and dependable soldier. His sincerity and operational skills earned the confidence of his seniors, leading to his deputation with the 1 Rashtriya Rifles (1 RR), an elite counter-insurgency force deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.

Serving with Rashtriya Rifles meant operating in some of the country's most challenging security environments, where every mission demanded courage, patience, and complete dedication.

Family Life

While serving the nation, Santosh also built a loving family. He married Smt. Dharmshila Yadav, and together they were blessed with two daughters.

Despite the demands of military life and frequent deployments, he remained a devoted husband and father. Whenever he returned home on leave, he spent his time with his family, knowing that his duty often kept him away for long periods.

Counter-Insurgency Deployment in Kashmir

In early 2022, Sepoy Santosh Yadav was serving with 1 Rashtriya Rifles in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. The region remained highly sensitive due to the presence of active terrorists, requiring security forces to remain on constant alert.

The unit regularly carried out intelligence-based search operations, often at short notice. Every mission involved significant risk, with soldiers expected to eliminate terrorists while ensuring the safety of innocent civilians.

The Shopian Operation – 19 February 2022

On 19 February 2022, intelligence agencies received specific information about the presence of heavily armed terrorists hiding in the Tsermarg (Chreymarg) area of Shopian district.

Based on the intelligence input, a joint search and cordon operation was launched involving personnel from the Indian Army's 1 Rashtriya Rifles, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Sepoy Santosh Yadav was among the soldiers selected for the operation.

In the early hours of the morning, the joint team reached the suspected location and surrounded the area. As security personnel advanced towards the suspected hideout, the terrorists suddenly opened heavy automatic fire from inside the building.

The exchange of fire immediately placed nearby civilians, including women and children, at grave risk. Demonstrating remarkable courage and professionalism, the security forces first focused on safely evacuating civilians before intensifying their operation against the terrorists.

Once the civilians had been moved to safety, the forces launched a determined assault. The encounter continued for several hours as the terrorists resisted fiercely. Throughout the operation, the troops carefully balanced aggressive action against the militants with efforts to prevent damage to civilian lives and property.

During the fierce gun battle, the security forces succeeded in eliminating one terrorist and continued the operation against the remaining militants.

While fearlessly engaging the terrorists, Sepoy Santosh Yadav and his fellow soldier Sepoy Romit Tanaji Chavan sustained critical injuries in the exchange of fire. Despite the best medical efforts, both brave soldiers later succumbed to their injuries.

Sepoy Santosh Yadav made the supreme sacrifice at the age of 28, fulfilling his duty with exceptional courage and unwavering devotion to the nation.
