On 22 August 2001, Major Amit Ahuja of 2 Dogra was serving at a forward post in the Gurez sector of Jammu & Kashmir when heavy cross-border firing began. During the intense exchange of fire, he sustained severe injuries. He was evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, Srinagar, but despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Major Amit Ahuja was born in February 1975 and hailed from Ambala, Haryana. He was the son of Yashpal Ahuja and Santosh Ahuja. From his early years, he had a strong desire to join the Indian Army. He completed his schooling at St. Paul School, Ambala, followed by his studies at Army School, Ambala Cantt, and later graduated from DAV College, Ambala.
Determined to pursue a military career, Amit cleared the Combined Defence Services examination and went on to train at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He was subsequently commissioned into the Dogra Regiment and joined 2 Dogra, beginning a career that would eventually take him to one of the most challenging operational environments in Jammu & Kashmir.
Serving in Gurez
In 2001, 2 Dogra was deployed in the Gurez sector, a remote and mountainous region of what is now Bandipora district.
The area presented its own set of challenges. Army personnel manning forward positions had to operate in high-altitude terrain, difficult weather and isolated locations while remaining alert to attempts by terrorists to cross the Line of Control.
The soldiers of 2 Dogra were responsible for guarding forward positions and also took part in counter-infiltration operations and patrols in the area.
Major Ahuja was serving at one of these forward positions on 22 August 2001.
That day, Pakistani forces opened fire in the Gurez sector, resulting in a prolonged exchange across the Line of Control. The forward Army positions came under heavy shelling.
The soldiers at the posts responded to the firing.
Major Ahuja remained at his position as the exchange continued.
During the heavy firing, he and two other soldiers sustained serious injuries. Major Ahuja was evacuated and taken to 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar for treatment. Despite the efforts to save him, his condition remained critical and he later succumbed to his injuries.
He was twenty-six years old.
A Young Officer Dedicated to the Army
Major Ahuja's military career was relatively short, but those who knew him remembered him as a committed and determined officer.
His decision to join the Army had been a long-held ambition. After completing his education in Ambala, he chose a life in uniform rather than pursuing a conventional civilian career.
By the time he was serving in Gurez, he was responsible for duties in an extremely demanding operational environment.
The Gurez sector required soldiers to remain prepared for both the dangers of the terrain and the threat of cross-border activity. Forward posts were often located in remote mountain areas, where the weather could be unforgiving and support was not always immediately available.
It was in these conditions that Major Ahuja served his final assignment.
The Family He Left Behind
For his parents, Yashpal Ahuja and Santosh Ahuja, the news of their son's sacrifice brought an immeasurable loss.
Major Ahuja had returned to Ambala only a short time before his final posting, according to accounts from people close to his family. His friends and relatives remembered him as someone who had been passionate about joining the Army and had remained committed to that dream throughout his life.
His family would continue to remember him not simply as an Army officer, but as a son who had grown up in Ambala, studied there and eventually chosen to serve the country.

The story of Major Amit Ahuja is not about a single moment of combat. It is also about the years of preparation, the choice of a difficult profession and the willingness to serve in a remote and challenging part of the country.
He was serving at a forward post in Gurez when the exchange of fire began. He remained committed to his duty until he was severely injured.
He was taken to Srinagar for treatment, but his injuries proved fatal.
On 22 August, we remember a young Army officer who had chosen service as his life's calling.
