Nehal was part of a patrol operating along the Line of Control when he sustained critical injuries in a mine blast. He was given immediate first aid and evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, Srinagar, but despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
A Young Soldier From a Military Family
Rifleman Nehal Gurung hailed from Khagrohre village in Basholi tehsil of Kathua district, Jammu & Kashmir. He was the only son of his parents and came from a family with a strong military tradition.
His father, Ravinder Gurung, had served in 2 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and retired from the Army in 2004. His grandfather, Subedar Anantbir Gurung, had also served in the Army and retired in 1983. His uncle too had served in the armed forces.
Nehal joined the Indian Army in 2014, when he was only 18 years old, and was enrolled into 5/9 Gorkha Rifles, part of the famed Gorkha Rifles.
By 2018, he was serving in the challenging operational environment of northern Jammu & Kashmir.
Serving Along the Line of Control
In 2018, 5/9 Gorkha Rifles was deployed in the Keran sector of Kupwara district, an area along the Line of Control that has historically remained sensitive because of the threat of infiltration.
The Army maintained a counter-infiltration grid in the area, with patrols regularly operating near the Line of Control.
Rifleman Nehal was part of one such patrol on 25 August 2018.
The patrol was being carried out near Balbir Post in the Keran sector.
During the patrol, an explosion occurred.
Nehal suffered critical injuries in the mine blast.
His comrades immediately provided first aid and arrangements were made to evacuate him for further medical treatment. He was taken to 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar, but his injuries proved fatal.
Nehal had joined the Army only four years earlier.
At the age of 18, he had chosen the uniform and followed a family tradition of military service. At 22, he was serving in one of the most demanding operational areas of the country.
His sacrifice was not made during a conventional battlefield engagement. He lost his life while carrying out the difficult and often unseen task of counter-infiltration duty along the Line of Control.
That duty requires soldiers to remain alert for long periods in difficult terrain, often under challenging weather and operational conditions.
Nehal was carrying out that responsibility when the mine blast occurred.
The Soldier His Family Remembered
For the people of Khagrohre and the wider Kathua area, his death was a deeply painful loss.
He was the only son of his parents and was part of a family that had already given generations to military service. His father and grandfather had both worn the uniform before him.
Reports following his death said that Nehal was to be married the following year, making his loss particularly painful for his family and loved ones.
His mortal remains were flown to Kathua, where his last rites were to be conducted with full military honours.
Before that, the Army also paid tribute to him at Badamibagh Cantonment in Srinagar, where the Chinar Corps Commander and other ranks paid their respects. Representatives of other security agencies also joined the tribute.
Remembering Rifleman Nehal Gurung
Rifleman Nehal Gurung's story is a reminder that protecting the Line of Control involves sacrifices that are often made far from public view.
He joined the Army as an 18-year-old.
He followed a family tradition of service.
He served with 5/9 Gorkha Rifles in the Keran sector.
And on 25 August 2018, while performing counter-infiltration duties, a mine blast left him critically injured.
His comrades did everything they could to save him. He was evacuated to Srinagar for treatment, but his injuries proved fatal.
He was only 22 years old.
A young soldier who served along one of India's most challenging frontiers.
A son from a family that had already dedicated generations to military service.
A braveheart whose life was cut short while performing his duty.
His service is remembered.
His courage is honoured.
