A Legacy of Courage, Leadership and Supreme Sacrifice
DySP Humayun Muzammil Bhat was one of the finest young officers of the Jammu & Kashmir Police, remembered for his fearless leadership, unwavering professionalism, and absolute dedication to protecting the people of Jammu & Kashmir. Though his career was tragically cut short, his courage, integrity, and sacrifice have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire police personnel and citizens across the country.
Born in Humhama, Budgam, Humayun hailed from a distinguished family deeply rooted in public service. His father, Ghulam Hassan Bhat, served as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, earning immense respect throughout his decades of service. Inspired by the values of duty, discipline, and patriotism from an early age, Humayun chose to follow the same path, determined to dedicate his life to the service of the nation.
After completing his education, Humayun joined the Jammu & Kashmir Police as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) in 2018. From the very beginning of his career, he was known as an officer who believed in leading from the front. Whether dealing with law-and-order situations or participating in counter-terrorism operations, he never hesitated to place himself alongside his men, earning their trust and admiration.
His calm temperament, tactical understanding, and ability to make quick decisions under pressure made him a respected leader. Colleagues often described him as approachable, humble, and deeply committed to the welfare of his team. Despite the risks associated with policing in Jammu & Kashmir, he remained steadfast in his resolve to uphold peace and protect innocent lives.
In 2023, DySP Humayun Bhat was posted as the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Kokernag, one of the region's most operationally challenging areas. The posting demanded constant vigilance, close coordination with the Indian Army and other security agencies, and the courage to confront heavily armed terrorists operating in dense forested terrain. Humayun embraced these responsibilities with determination and professionalism.
On 13 September 2023, security forces received intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists hiding in the dense forests of Gadool, Kokernag in Anantnag district. A joint operation involving the Indian Army and the Jammu & Kashmir Police was launched to locate and neutralise the terrorists.
DySP Humayun Muzammil Bhat volunteered to accompany the assault team as it advanced through the difficult mountainous terrain. As the joint team closed in on the suspected hideout, the terrorists launched a sudden and intense attack from well-concealed positions, triggering a fierce exchange of fire.
Despite coming under heavy enemy fire and sustaining serious injuries, DySP Humayun Bhat continued to lead from the front. Displaying exceptional courage and complete disregard for his own safety, he encouraged his team to continue the operation while remaining engaged in the firefight. His actions reflected the highest standards of leadership, bravery, and devotion to duty.
He ultimately made the supreme sacrifice while defending the nation. His sacrifice, alongside that of his fellow officers and soldiers during the operation, became a symbol of the immense courage displayed daily by India's security forces in safeguarding the country's sovereignty.
In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, conspicuous courage, and devotion to duty beyond the call of duty, DySP Humayun Muzammil Bhat was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award. The honour recognised not only his fearless actions during the Kokernag operation but also his unwavering commitment to protecting the nation.
Beyond his uniform, Humayun was known as a compassionate son, a loving husband, and a caring father. He believed that true leadership meant serving others with humility and courage. His life remains a powerful reminder that the greatest heroes are often those who quietly dedicate themselves to protecting others, expecting nothing in return.
Today, DySP Humayun Muzammil Bhat is remembered not merely for the manner in which he laid down his life, but for the values he lived by—honour, integrity, courage, and selfless service. His story continues to inspire young officers, security personnel, and every Indian who believes in the ideals of sacrifice and national service.
The Honour Post pays its heartfelt tribute to DySP Humayun Muzammil Bhat, Kirti Chakra (Posthumous). His courage, leadership, and supreme sacrifice will forever remain etched in the history of Jammu & Kashmir Police and in the hearts of a grateful nation.
Lest We Forget. Jai Hind. 🇮🇳
