Major Satish Dahiya was one of the finest officers of the Indian Army, remembered for his fearless leadership, unwavering dedication, and extraordinary courage in the fight against terrorism. A proud officer of The Assam Regiment, he was serving with the 30 Rashtriya Rifles when he made the supreme sacrifice during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu & Kashmir.
Born in Banihari village of Haryana's Rohtak district, Major Satish Dahiya grew up with a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to serve the nation. From a young age, he was known for his discipline, determination, and strong leadership qualities. His dream of wearing the olive green uniform eventually led him to the Indian Army, where he earned the respect of both his seniors and the soldiers under his command.
Throughout his military career, Major Dahiya developed a reputation as an officer who always led from the front. Whether on routine operational duties or high-risk counter-terrorism missions, he never asked his men to face dangers that he was unwilling to confront himself. His courage, tactical brilliance, and calm decision-making earned him the admiration of his comrades.
During his tenure with 30 Rashtriya Rifles in Kashmir, Major Dahiya played a vital role in numerous successful counter-terrorism operations. His leadership significantly strengthened the unit's operational effectiveness, and he became known for his relentless pursuit of terrorists while ensuring the safety of civilians and his fellow soldiers.
On 14 February 2017, acting on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in Hajin, Bandipora district, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army. Major Satish Dahiya was among the officers leading the assault team as they closed in on the terrorists' hideout.
As the search party advanced, the terrorists opened heavy fire from concealed positions. Displaying exceptional courage, Major Dahiya immediately engaged the terrorists while directing his team to secure advantageous positions. Despite sustaining serious injuries during the exchange of fire, he refused to withdraw from the operation.
Ignoring his own safety, he continued leading the assault, motivating his men and ensuring that the terrorists remained pinned down. His courageous actions enabled the operation to progress successfully and prevented the terrorists from escaping.
Major Satish Dahiya ultimately made the supreme sacrifice while fighting at the forefront of the operation. His leadership, courage under fire, and unwavering devotion to duty reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
In recognition of his exceptional bravery and conspicuous gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India's highest peacetime gallantry awards.
Beyond the battlefield, Major Dahiya was remembered as a compassionate leader, a devoted husband, a loving father, and an officer who deeply cared for the welfare of his soldiers. His humility and cheerful nature left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
