Sepoy Ajay Kumar was a courageous soldier of the Indian Army whose life was defined by discipline, patriotism, and selfless service. Hailing from Kotla Panjola village in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, he joined the Indian Army in 2013, fulfilling his dream of serving the nation. Through his dedication and professionalism, he earned the respect of his comrades and commanders alike.
After serving with his parent regiment, he was deputed to the 42 Rashtriya Rifles, a frontline counter-terrorism unit deployed in Jammu & Kashmir. Operating in one of the country's most challenging environments, Sepoy Ajay Kumar took part in numerous operations against terrorists, displaying exceptional courage and unwavering commitment to duty.
On 24 April 2018, during a counter-terrorism operation in the Tral area of Pulwama district, Sepoy Ajay Kumar was assigned as the lead scout of the assault team. As the troops advanced towards the suspected terrorist hideout, they came under heavy fire and grenade attacks from concealed positions.
Realising the grave danger facing his comrades, Sepoy Ajay Kumar displayed extraordinary courage by engaging the terrorists despite being exposed to intense enemy fire. His fearless action enabled the rest of his team to move into safer positions and continue the operation. During the fierce encounter, he successfully neutralised a dreaded terrorist before sustaining a critical gunshot wound to the head.
He was immediately evacuated for medical treatment but made the supreme sacrifice while serving the nation. His gallant actions played a decisive role in the success of the operation and reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
In recognition of his exceptional bravery, indomitable spirit, and devotion to duty beyond the call of duty, Sepoy Ajay Kumar was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India's highest peacetime gallantry awards.
