Sepoy Tanzin Chhultim was a courageous soldier of the Indian Army whose life was dedicated to the service of the nation. Hailing from Karpat village in the Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, he grew up with strong values of discipline, patriotism, and selfless service. Driven by his dream of wearing the olive green uniform, he joined the Indian Army in 2012 and soon established himself as a dependable and dedicated soldier.
After serving with his parent regiment, he was deployed with the 62 Rashtriya Rifles, one of the Indian Army's frontline counter-terrorism units operating in Jammu & Kashmir. Serving in challenging operational conditions, Sepoy Tanzin Chhultim participated in numerous missions aimed at safeguarding the nation and protecting innocent lives. His professionalism, determination, and fearless approach earned him the respect of his fellow soldiers.
On the night of 2 August 2017, security forces received intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the Zaipora area of Shopian district. A search and cordon operation was immediately planned, and the assault team moved into the area to neutralise the threat.
During the early hours of 3 August 2017, the troops came under heavy terrorist fire from concealed positions, resulting in a fierce encounter. Demonstrating exceptional courage, Sepoy Tanzin Chhultim stood shoulder to shoulder with his comrades, engaging the terrorists with determination despite the intense exchange of gunfire. While fighting bravely in the operation, he sustained critical injuries.
He was immediately evacuated for medical treatment, but despite every effort to save his life, Sepoy Tanzin Chhultim made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. His courage and unwavering commitment to the nation reflected the finest traditions of the Indian Army.
Though his life was cut short at a young age, his sacrifice continues to inspire soldiers and citizens across the country. His legacy serves as a reminder of the immense courage and dedication displayed by those who stand guard to defend India's sovereignty.
