Constable Shiv Karan Singh of 16 Battalion, Central Reserve Police Force, was a courageous member of the force who made the supreme sacrifice while confronting militants during an anti-terrorist operation in Srinagar on 05 September 1992. Born on 01 July 1963, he hailed from Tatra village in Hanumanpura, Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. He chose a life of service in uniform and carried out his duties in one of the most challenging periods of counter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
In 1992, 16 Battalion CRPF was deployed in Srinagar city for anti-terrorist operations. The duties of the battalion included area domination patrols and security operations across sensitive parts of the city. These patrols required the personnel to remain constantly alert, as militants could use narrow lanes and surrounding areas to launch sudden attacks.
On 05 September 1992, a contingent of 16 Battalion was conducting an area domination patrol near Amira Kadal in Srinagar. The troops were carrying out their duties when militants suddenly launched an ambush. The attackers opened indiscriminate fire on the CRPF personnel from the surrounding by-lanes, creating an intense and dangerous situation for the patrol.
The CRPF personnel immediately responded to the attack and launched a determined counter-attack. The engagement quickly developed into a fierce encounter in the narrow lanes of the area. The militants attempted to use the surrounding streets and by-lanes to their advantage, but the CRPF personnel continued to confront them with courage and determination.
The Battle Near Amira Kadal
Constable Shiv Karan Singh was fighting from the front when the encounter intensified. He displayed remarkable courage as he charged ferociously towards the militants, refusing to allow the attackers to dictate the course of the engagement.
The determined response of the CRPF personnel forced the militants to retreat. They fled through the narrow lanes and by-lanes of the area, attempting to take advantage of the congested surroundings to escape. During the fierce encounter, Constable Shiv Karan Singh sustained severe injuries while fighting the militants. His sacrifice was a profound loss to his family, his comrades and the Central Reserve Police Force. He left behind his wife, Smt. Savita, while his native village in Rajasthan mourned the loss of a son who had dedicated his life to serving the nation.
