Constable Panwar Vijay Gangadhar of the 122 Battalion, Central Reserve Police Force, was serving in Jammu and Kashmir when he faced a deadly attack at his battalion camp in Magam, Budgam, on 06 September 2001. Born on 05 June 1975 and belonging to Maharashtra, he served in an environment where vigilance and courage were essential at every moment. On that day, his alertness at the main gate placed him directly in the path of a militant attack, and he gave his life while attempting to protect his fellow personnel and the camp.
The Brave Stand at the Main Gate
On 06 September 2001, a truck suddenly rammed through the barriers placed at the entrance of the 122 Battalion CRPF camp at Magam and forced its way inside. Constable Panwar Vijay Gangadhar was performing sentry duty at the main gate. Recognising the suspicious forced entry, he immediately reacted to the threat. He opened fire at the tyres of the truck and moved towards it, determined to stop the vehicle before it could cause greater harm.
Other CRPF personnel also rushed forward and took positions to confront the approaching vehicle. As the troops moved towards the truck, the militant driving it activated an improvised explosive device concealed inside. The vehicle was transformed into a deadly weapon, and the resulting explosion caused devastating destruction inside the camp.
Constable Panwar Vijay Gangadhar was caught in the blast and made the supreme sacrifice. Seven other CRPF personnel were also injured in the attack. His actions at the gate reflected the instinctive courage expected of a sentry entrusted with protecting his comrades. Faced with a suspicious vehicle that had breached the camp's defences, he did not retreat. He fired at the truck and moved towards the danger in an attempt to stop it.
His sacrifice became part of the proud history of the Central Reserve Police Force and the long roll of personnel who have given their lives while protecting their comrades and serving the nation. The CRPF continues to remember Constable Panwar Vijay Gangadhar among its fallen bravehearts, with his name recorded in the force's remembrance records for the sacrifice he made at Magam on 06 September 2001.
For his family, comrades and the force he served, his absence remains a lasting loss. For the nation, his story stands as a reminder of the courage carried by those who stand guard when danger comes without warning.
