Inspector Dalbir Singh of the Border Security Force was one of the brave officers who made the supreme sacrifice while serving the nation in Jammu & Kashmir. Born on 12 December 1947, he dedicated his life to the service of the country and served with 91 Battalion BSF.
Inspector Dalbir Singh belonged to a generation of BSF personnel who served in some of the most demanding operational environments. His service took him into areas where the responsibility of protecting the nation was accompanied by the constant threat posed by terrorists. He continued to perform his duties with courage, discipline and devotion to duty.
By September 2004, he was serving with 91 Battalion BSF in Jammu & Kashmir. The region remained a challenging operational environment, with security forces engaged in sustained counter-terrorist operations. For personnel deployed in these areas, every operation carried the possibility of facing armed terrorists at close quarters.
Inspector Dalbir Singh stood among those who accepted these responsibilities without hesitation. His service reflected the commitment expected from the Border Security Force, whose personnel have repeatedly served beyond the conventional boundaries of their border-guarding role when the security of the nation demanded it.
The Final Operation at Kalakot
On 09 September 2004, Inspector Dalbir Singh was engaged in operations against terrorists in the Kalakot area of Jammu & Kashmir. During the operation, the security personnel came face to face with armed terrorists in a dangerous encounter.
Inspector Dalbir Singh fought the terrorists in the line of duty and remained committed to the task entrusted to him. The encounter proved fatal, and he made the supreme sacrifice on 09 September 2004.
He was 56 years old when he gave his life in the service of the nation. His sacrifice came after decades of a life dedicated to duty and service, and his loss was a reminder of the risks faced by security personnel operating in Jammu & Kashmir.
His courage and service were later recognised with the President's Police Medal for Gallantry, one of the country's highest police gallantry honours. The recognition stands as a lasting acknowledgement of the bravery displayed by Inspector Dalbir Singh in the face of grave danger.
