2nd Lieutenant L. K. Nadgir was a young officer of the Indian Army who served with 6 Maratha Light Infantry during the Indo-Pak War of 1965.
In September 1965, his battalion was deployed in the Sialkot Sector as Indian forces advanced towards Chawinda, one of the major battlefields of the war.
The Battle of Chawinda
During the night of 18 September 1965, 6 Maratha Light Infantry took part in the assault towards Chawinda. The battalion fought through strong opposition and succeeded in capturing its assigned objective, including the Chawinda railway station, in the early hours of 19 September.
The position was subsequently subjected to intense enemy artillery and tank fire. The battalion faced repeated counter-attacks while attempting to hold the ground it had captured.
2nd Lieutenant L. K. Nadgir was among the officers and soldiers who continued fighting in these difficult circumstances. As the battle intensified, the battalion came under heavy fire from enemy forces.
The Final Sacrifice
2nd Lieutenant L. K. Nadgir made the supreme sacrifice on 19 September 1965 during the fighting at Chawinda.
His martyrdom came alongside that of Lieutenant Colonel A. Mathew Manohar, the Commanding Officer of 6 Maratha Light Infantry, and other personnel of the battalion during the intense fighting in the Sialkot Sector.
2nd Lieutenant L. K. Nadgir's service and sacrifice remain part of the history of 6 Maratha Light Infantry and the Indian Army's operations during the 1965 war.
