Naik Anil Kumar of 16 Punjab, The Punjab Regiment, was a soldier who displayed exceptional courage and presence of mind while defending his post against a determined enemy assault along the Line of Control. Serving in the challenging operational environment of Kupwara, he stood among the soldiers entrusted with guarding a sensitive frontier and protecting their comrades from armed infiltration attempts.
On 04 September 2012, troops at Abdul Hut Post were maintaining a high state of alert following intelligence inputs about a possible raid by the enemy. At around 4:40 in the afternoon, the post came under heavy automatic fire from the Ratwaji Nar area of Kupwara. The sudden attack created an intense and dangerous situation for the soldiers defending the position.
During the initial exchange of fire, Sepoy Sushil Kumar was wounded. Naik Anil Kumar was manning a Medium Machine Gun and immediately retaliated against the attackers. As the terrorists came closer to the post, he recognised the seriousness of the threat and understood that his weapon could play a decisive role in stopping their advance.
With remarkable presence of mind and complete disregard for his own safety, Naik Anil Kumar lifted the Medium Machine Gun out of its bunker and brought it into a position from where he could effectively engage the advancing terrorists. Exposing himself to enemy fire, he opened accurate and sustained fire on the attackers.
His action caused a casualty among the terrorists and helped beat back the assault. The situation, however, remained extremely dangerous. During the continuing firefight, Naik Anil Kumar himself sustained a burst of enemy fire.
The Defence of Abdul Hut Post
Even after being wounded, Naik Anil Kumar refused to abandon his position. Instead of seeking safety, he continued providing covering fire for the other soldiers so that they could react and engage the enemy effectively.
His determination gave his comrades the opportunity to return fire and prevented the attackers from gaining further ground. Despite his injuries and the continuing danger, he remained focused on the defence of the post and the safety of the soldiers around him.
The courage displayed by Naik Anil Kumar helped force the enemy to retreat and ensured that the assault on Abdul Hut Post was successfully repulsed. His actions demonstrated the kind of battlefield instinct and selfless courage that can make a decisive difference when a defensive position comes under intense attack.
Although he survived the initial engagement, the injuries he sustained proved fatal. Naik Anil Kumar later succumbed to those injuries on 25 September 2012 at Army Hospital (Research and Referral), New Delhi, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
For his great courage, initiative, exceptional bravery and devotion to duty, Naik Anil Kumar was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
His story stands alongside the proud legacy of the soldiers of 16 Punjab who served in some of the most demanding areas of the nation. When the post came under attack, he did not step back. He brought his Medium Machine Gun out of its protected position, confronted the advancing enemy and continued providing covering fire even after being wounded.
