Naik Rajeshver Singh of 16 Punjab, The Punjab Regiment, was a soldier whose courage was revealed in its fullest measure when his post came under a determined attack along the Line of Control in Kupwara. He belonged to Tehari village in the Ramnagar area of Jammu and Kashmir and was the son of Shri Balwan Singh and Smt Satya Devi. After completing his schooling, he joined the Indian Army and became part of 16 Punjab, carrying with him the proud traditions of The Punjab Regiment.
In 2012, 16 Punjab was deployed in the challenging operational environment of Kupwara, where soldiers remained constantly vigilant against attempts by armed infiltrators to cross the Line of Control. Naik Rajeshver Singh was serving at Abdul Hut Post, a position where every soldier understood the importance of alertness, courage and mutual trust. The men guarding the post knew that their duty demanded readiness to face danger at any moment.
On 04 September 2012, intelligence inputs had indicated the possibility of an enemy raid, and the troops at Abdul Hut Post were maintaining a heightened state of alert. At around 4:40 in the afternoon, the post came under heavy automatic fire from the Ratwaji Nar area. The attackers used the thick foliage surrounding the position as cover while attempting to advance towards the post.
During the initial exchange of fire, Sepoy Sushil Kumar was wounded. Seeing his comrade in danger, Naik Rajeshver Singh immediately moved towards him. Even though the post was under intense fire, his first concern was the safety of his injured fellow soldier. As he moved forward, he noticed the terrorists advancing through the thick foliage towards the position.
Understanding that the attackers were closing in, Rajeshver Singh changed his position and moved towards the leading terrorist who had managed to approach the post. He confronted the threat directly rather than allowing the attackers to gain further ground. His decision brought him into a fierce engagement at close range.
The Defence of Abdul Hut Post
During the ensuing firefight, Naik Rajeshver Singh successfully killed one of the terrorists. However, he was himself struck by a burst of enemy fire. Despite suffering serious injuries, he refused to withdraw from the battle.
His determination remained unbroken. He continued engaging the attackers and managed to injure another terrorist. His actions helped disrupt the assault and contributed to the successful defence of Abdul Hut Post. The attacking terrorists were ultimately forced to abandon their attempt to overrun the position.
Rajeshver Singh had placed himself in danger first to assist a wounded comrade and then to confront the terrorists advancing towards his post. Even after being wounded himself, he continued to fight because the safety of his fellow soldiers and the defence of the position remained his priority.
He later succumbed to the injuries sustained during the engagement and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty on 04 September 2012.
For his indomitable spirit, exceptional bravery, courage and camaraderie beyond the call of duty, Naik Rajeshver Singh was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
His story remains a powerful example of the bond between soldiers. When his comrade was wounded, he went to his aid. When the enemy advanced, he confronted them. When he himself was wounded, he continued fighting. His actions reflected the courage and devotion to duty that define the finest traditions of the Indian Army.
