Shri Jaman Singh Rawat was serving as an armed guard at the Dehradun-Hardwar Road branch of the State Bank of Patiala. On 15 September 1990, three armed men entered the bank carrying pistols and AK-47 rifles with the intention of committing a robbery.
Rawat immediately challenged one of the intruders. The robber fired two pistol shots at him, seriously wounding him. Despite his injuries, Rawat showed exceptional courage and returned fire with his service weapon, injuring the attacker and helping to thwart the attempted robbery.
The Final Sacrifice
As the situation unfolded, the other two armed robbers opened fire with their AK-47 rifles. Despite being wounded, Shri Jaman Singh Rawat continued to resist. He was fatally wounded in the firing and made the supreme sacrifice at the scene.
For his exceptional courage, presence of mind and devotion to duty, Shri Jaman Singh Rawat was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously, with the award effective from 15 September 1990.
His actions that day stand as an example of extraordinary courage. Facing armed assailants at close quarters, he continued to perform his duty despite sustaining serious injuries and ultimately laid down his life while protecting others.
