Assistant Sub-Inspector Sohan Lal of the Border Security Force made the supreme sacrifice while guarding the nation’s frontier in Jammu and Kashmir on 13 September 2015. A resident of Sikar district in Rajasthan, he was serving with the 163 Battalion BSF and was deployed at a forward location along the Line of Control in Rajouri.

As a member of the Border Security Force, Sohan Lal carried out the demanding responsibility of guarding a forward position in one of the country’s most challenging operational environments. His duty required constant vigilance and courage in the face of hostile fire along the frontier.

The Final Duty at Rajouri: 13 September 2015

On the evening of 13 September 2015, forward BSF positions in the Manjakote sector of Rajouri came under mortar shelling and automatic-weapons fire from across the Line of Control. The firing targeted Indian forward positions in the area.

Two 82-mm mortar bombs exploded near an Indian forward post at around 6:20 pm. Sohan Lal sustained severe splinter injuries in the attack. Despite immediate efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice that evening while performing his duty at the forward position.

A BSF remembrance record identifies Sohan Lal with 163 Battalion BSF and records his date of martyrdom as 13 September 2015. His final duty was at FDL Bump 3 in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, where he sustained fatal injuries during the exchange of fire.

Sohan Lal’s sacrifice came while he was performing the demanding and often dangerous duty of protecting a forward position on the border. His final hours were spent at his post, standing guard in the service of the nation.

For his family, comrades and the Border Security Force, 13 September remains a solemn day of remembrance. The courage and devotion with which Sohan Lal served at the frontier form part of the long record of sacrifice made by BSF personnel protecting India’s borders under difficult circumstances.

His name remains among the Bravehearts of the Border Security Force who made the supreme sacrifice in Jammu and Kashmir. More than a decade later, his service and sacrifice continue to deserve remembrance with pride, gratitude and respect.

The Honour Post pays tribute to ASI Sohan Lal, Border Security Force, for his courage, devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
