Assistant Commandant Rajender Kumar Pamma of 133 Battalion, CRPF, was serving in Manipur during a period of intense insurgent activity. The battalion was deployed for anti-insurgency operations aimed at curtailing the activities of insurgent groups.
On 24 September 1997, troops of 133 Battalion were returning from an operation in Imphal when insurgents lying in ambush opened indiscriminate fire on the returning force.
Facing the Ambush in Manipur
The troops immediately took positions and retaliated. With little cover available in the area, the force was in a difficult position. As the encounter intensified, the troops advanced using heavy fire in an effort to overcome the ambush.
A fierce gunfight followed. Despite the difficult circumstances, the courage and determination of the CRPF personnel forced the insurgents to flee from their positions.
Assistant Commandant Rajender Kumar Pamma was among the six CRPF personnel who made the supreme sacrifice during the encounter on 24 September 1997, alongside Lance Naik Dharampal Singh, Constable/Driver Mohammad Zubair, Constable Mohammad Latif, Constable Lakheshwar Baaniya and Constable Dalip Khangiya.
His service and sacrifice in the line of duty remain a part of the proud history of the Central Reserve Police Force.
