Captain Chander Choudhary was a young Indian Army officer whose life was defined by a deep commitment to the nation, his regiment and the men entrusted to his leadership. Born on 16 October 1971, he hailed from Beegawas Ramsara village in Dungargarh tehsil of Bikaner district, Rajasthan. He was the son of Dr K. L. Sihag and Smt Sundar Devi and grew up with his brother Satyendra Choudhary and sister Jeevani Devi.
From his early years, Captain Choudhary showed qualities of discipline and leadership. He completed his schooling at Our Lady of Nazareth High School in Mumbai and later studied at Mithibai College. He subsequently moved to Hyderabad for higher education and completed his graduation in Commerce from Osmania University in 1996.
His ambition to serve the nation in uniform led him to appear for the Combined Defence Services Examination. He was selected for the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, where he underwent military training and prepared for a career in the Indian Army. He was commissioned into the proud Grenadiers Regiment and joined 4 Grenadiers in 1999.
Captain Choudhary's early years in uniform took him to the challenging operational environment of Jammu & Kashmir. His unit served in the Poonch sector, where he gained valuable experience while carrying out duties along the Line of Control. The demanding conditions of the region tested the endurance and leadership of every soldier, and Captain Choudhary steadily established himself as an officer who could be relied upon in difficult circumstances.
He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2000. His professional qualities and field experience eventually led to him being entrusted with the command of a Ghatak Platoon. He had also undergone commando training at Belgaum, preparing him for the demanding responsibilities of leading troops in close-quarter situations.
Behind the uniform was a young family man. Captain Chander Choudhary married Smt Sharda Choudhary on 21 May 1997. The couple were blessed with a son, Siddharth. His military responsibilities, however, frequently took him away from his family as he served in challenging areas of Jammu & Kashmir.
In July 2002, 4 Grenadiers moved to the Mahore area of Udhampur district for counter-insurgency duties. Captain Choudhary was serving with the unit and commanding his Ghatak Platoon when information was received about the presence of armed terrorists in the area.
The Final Operation at Dubri
On the night of 08 September 2002, intelligence indicated that hardcore terrorists were hiding in a maize field near Dubri village in Udhampur district. Captain Chander Choudhary immediately moved with his Ghatak Platoon and established a cordon around the suspected area.
The troops began an intensive search of the area and soon came into contact with the terrorists. Captain Choudhary led his men from the front as the engagement developed. During the fierce encounter, six terrorists were eliminated in the initial action.
The operation remained dangerous, as the exact number of terrorists present in the area was not immediately known. The troops continued their search and maintained the cordon to prevent any remaining militants from escaping.
During the continuing engagement, one of the terrorists suddenly emerged from behind a boulder and opened indiscriminate fire on the troops. Captain Choudhary immediately confronted the threat and engaged the terrorist. In the ensuing exchange of fire, he successfully neutralised the terrorist, but sustained multiple gunshot wounds himself.
Despite the seriousness of his injuries, Captain Chander Choudhary had already demonstrated the qualities for which he was respected as a leader. He had led his Ghatak Platoon into the engagement and remained at the forefront while his men faced a determined and dangerous enemy.
Captain Choudhary was evacuated by air after sustaining his injuries, but his condition remained critical. He succumbed to his injuries on 09 September 2002.
He was only 30 years old.
Captain Chander Choudhary left behind his parents, his wife Sharda, his young son Siddharth, his brother and his sister. His sacrifice was a profound loss to his family, his comrades and the regiment to which he had devoted his young life.
His memory has continued to be honoured in his native Rajasthan. A statue of Captain Chander Choudhary was installed in Bikaner, and the junction where it stands was named Captain Chander Choudhary Circle. A road leading from the circle was also named in his honour. In his native Beegawas Ramsara, a school was named Captain Shaheed Chander Choudhary Senior Higher Secondary School, ensuring that the memory of the young officer remains connected to the community from which he came.
Captain Chander Choudhary's military journey was brief, but it was filled with purpose. From his childhood in Rajasthan and his years of education to his commissioning into 4 Grenadiers and his service in Jammu & Kashmir, he dedicated himself to the responsibilities of an Army officer.
At Dubri, he led his men into a dangerous encounter with armed terrorists and continued to command from the front until he was seriously wounded. His courage and leadership remain a part of the proud history of 4 Grenadiers and a reminder of the young officers who have given their lives in the service of the nation.
