Captain Prabal Roy of 4 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles made the supreme sacrifice on 20 September 1965 during the Indo-Pak War of 1965 in the Chawinda sector.
At the outbreak of the war, Captain Roy was serving as a Staff Officer at Army Headquarters in New Delhi. He volunteered to rejoin his battalion and fight alongside his men on the front. His unit, 4 JAK Rif, was operating under 58 Infantry Brigade in the intense fighting around Chawinda.
The Battle
As the fighting around Chawinda intensified, 4 JAK Rif came under heavy enemy artillery fire. Amid the intense shelling, Captain Roy remained with his men, helping to organise the defence and directing his soldiers despite the difficult battlefield conditions.
During one of the intense artillery barrages, an enemy shell exploded close to his position. Captain Roy was gravely wounded by shrapnel, sustaining severe injuries.
The Final Sacrifice
Despite the seriousness of his injuries, Captain Roy refused immediate evacuation and insisted that the more critically wounded soldiers under his command be evacuated first. He continued to direct the defence and encourage his men while waiting for the evacuation vehicle to return.
By the time the vehicle returned for him, he had lost a critical amount of blood. Captain Prabal Roy made the supreme sacrifice on 20 September 1965.
His courage, leadership and selflessness remain part of the proud history of 4 JAK Rif and the Indian Army.
His service and sacrifice will always be remembered.
