31 Medium Regiment officer who made the supreme sacrifice while manning a forward post in Kupwara
Captain Vinayak Vishnu Gore was born on 21 July 1968 in Mumbai. He studied at Parle Tilak Vidyalaya and later graduated from Narsee Monjee College.
A talented footballer, Vinayak was known among his friends for his sporting ability. He had initially pursued Chartered Accountancy but later chose a career in the Indian Army and prepared for the Combined Defence Services examination.
He joined the Indian Military Academy and was commissioned into the Indian Army on 12 June 1991 as a Second Lieutenant. He was initially posted in Punjab and later served in Jammu and Kashmir during the height of counter-terror operations.
During his service in Jammu and Kashmir, Captain Vinayak Gore took part in road-opening duties, gun area deployments and counter-terror operations in Kupwara.
On 26 September 1995, Captain Gore was manning a forward post in Kupwara when heavy shelling began. He remained at his position with his men as the attack unfolded.
A direct hit from a shell struck the post, and Captain Vinayak Vishnu Gore made the supreme sacrifice.
He was only 27 years old and had completed just over four years of commissioned service when he made the supreme sacrifice in Jammu and Kashmir.
His service and sacrifice remain a part of the story of the Indian Army's operations in Kupwara during one of the most difficult periods of counter-terror operations in the region.
