Constable Deep Kumar was a brave member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police who served with the 8th Battalion. His service took him to Jammu and Kashmir, where personnel of the force performed demanding duties in difficult and often dangerous conditions.
In the years when terrorism posed a serious security challenge in Jammu and Kashmir, ITBP personnel were deployed on operational duties alongside other security forces. Road Opening Party duties were among these responsibilities, requiring personnel to secure routes and protect the movement of forces and civilians against possible attacks.
The Final Sacrifice
On 16 September 2000, Constable Deep Kumar was performing Road Opening Party duty near Gadol in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir when the ITBP team came under attack.
In the ensuing encounter, Constable Deep Kumar fought the attackers while carrying out his duty. He made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, giving his life while serving in one of the country's most challenging operational environments.
His martyrdom was a loss to his comrades, his family and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. He belonged to a force entrusted with some of India's most demanding responsibilities, and he stood firm in the face of danger while performing his assigned duty.
Constable Deep Kumar remains remembered as a Braveheart of the ITBP whose life was dedicated to service. His supreme sacrifice in Jammu and Kashmir remains a part of the proud history of those who served on the front lines against terrorism.
