Constable Girdhari Lal of the 114 Battalion, CRPF, made the supreme sacrifice while taking part in an operation against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir on 27 September 2002.

The operation was launched jointly by the 114 Battalion, CRPF, the Special Operations Group and the Army against terrorists at Kalismaour village in the Magam area of Budgam district.

During the cordon, the terrorists opened heavy fire and attempted to escape before taking refuge inside a house. Constable Girdhari Lal mounted an automatic grenade launcher and engaged them effectively.

He managed to neutralise one of the attackers but sustained bullet injuries during the engagement. He made the supreme sacrifice while being taken to hospital.

The other attackers were subsequently neutralised. Weapons and other items were also recovered from the site following the operation.

Constable Girdhari Lal's sacrifice remains part of the CRPF's record of service in Jammu and Kashmir.
