In the early 1990s, when terrorism in Punjab was at its peak, the Central Reserve Police Force was deployed for operations against terrorists. The 61 Battalion of the CRPF was deployed in Ludhiana, Punjab.
On 26 September 1991, Constable Hirdya Nand was on patrolling duty with his section when they came under heavy fire from terrorists.
Without concern for his own safety, Constable Hirdya Nand got into action and retaliated. Seeing his courage, the other members of his section also joined the counter-attack.
While changing his firing position, Constable Hirdya Nand sustained bullet injuries and succumbed to his injuries.
His courage and devotion to duty remain a part of the proud legacy of the Central Reserve Police Force.
