Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad of the Jammu & Kashmir Police was among the brave police personnel who stood in the line of duty while serving the people of Jammu & Kashmir. Posted in District Anantnag, he was serving at Police Post General Bus Stand when he was confronted by a sudden terrorist attack on 09 September 2017.

During his posting in District Anantnag, he was entrusted with duties at Police Post General Bus Stand, an important public location where police personnel remained responsible for maintaining security and responding to threats.
For police personnel serving in Jammu & Kashmir during those years, routine duty carried the constant possibility of danger. On 09 September 2017, Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad was performing his legitimate duty near the General Bus Stand in Anantnag when terrorists launched an attack on a police party.
The Terrorist Attack at General Bus Stand
The terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on the police personnel near the General Bus Stand. The sudden attack struck the police party without warning, and Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad was seriously wounded in the firing.
Despite the danger, the police personnel immediately responded to the attack. The terrorists attempted to escape after opening fire, while the police retaliated and launched efforts to pursue the attackers. Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad, however, had sustained grievous injuries in the assault.
He was taken to hospital for treatment, but the injuries he had suffered proved fatal. Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad made the supreme sacrifice on 09 September 2017 while performing his duty as a member of the Jammu & Kashmir Police.
His sacrifice came during a period when police personnel across Jammu & Kashmir were facing persistent threats from terrorists. He was serving at a public place in Anantnag when he became the target of an attack, yet his duty demanded that he remain present and vigilant despite the dangers surrounding him.
Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad's courage and devotion to duty were later recognised by the Government of India with the President's Police Medal for Gallantry, awarded posthumously for the year 2019. The honour stands as recognition of the bravery he displayed while serving the people and upholding the responsibilities entrusted to him as a member of the Jammu & Kashmir Police.
His story is also a reminder of the sacrifices made by police personnel who serve in the most challenging environments. Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad was carrying out an ordinary duty at a public place when extraordinary danger came before him.
