On 26 September 2014, Constable Kirtikar Nishad was performing sentry duty at the main gate of E/44 Battalion, CRPF, under Police Station Maharaj Gunj in Srinagar.
At around 1824 hours, some unidentified terrorists took advantage of the dense crowd and opened fire at him.
Constable Kirtikar Nishad ducked for cover, but a bullet struck him and he sustained severe injuries. Despite being wounded, he attempted to open fire, but did not do so as the target was not clear.
He was evacuated to hospital for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice.
Constable Kirtikar Nishad's devotion to duty while performing sentry duty remains a part of the proud legacy of the Central Reserve Police Force.
