Constable Mukesh Kumar Bunkar of the Central Reserve Police Force was serving with 203 CoBRA Battalion during anti-Maoist operations in Jharkhand.
On 18 September 2012, troops of 203 CoBRA Battalion launched an operation against Maoists at Juri-Rabda village under Pratappur Police Station in Chatra district. After moving through the jungle throughout the night, the troops reached the target village before dawn and began searching the area.
Continuing the Fight Despite Severe Injuries
A small team under Deputy Commandant P. R. Mishra moved towards a hut, where Maoists opened indiscriminate fire. A fierce gun battle followed at close range, with the troops also receiving fire from an adjoining maize field.
The troops continued their assault. Constable Mukesh Kumar Bunkar, who was at the front while fighting the Maoists, sustained severe bullet injuries. Despite his injuries, he continued firing and prevented the Maoists from escaping.
Mukesh Kumar Bunkar later made the supreme sacrifice during treatment at a hospital on 24 September 2012.
For his gallantry and courage, he was awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously by the President.
His service and sacrifice remain a part of the proud history of the Central Reserve Police Force.
