Constable Sajjal Malakar of 49 Battalion CRPF was serving in Jammu and Kashmir during a period when CRPF personnel were regularly entrusted with difficult security duties in areas affected by terrorist violence. Born on 01 March 1974, he hailed from Dharmanagar in North Tripura, Tripura, and served the nation as a member of the Central Reserve Police Force.
On 11 September 2002, troops of 49 Battalion CRPF were escorting a VIP through Surankote in Poonch district, Jammu & Kashmir. As the convoy reached the Bus Stand at Surankote, terrorists took advantage of the crowded surroundings and hurled a grenade towards the escort vehicle.
The explosion caused chaos at the busy bus stand as people began fleeing from the area. Taking advantage of the confusion and the crowd, the terrorist managed to escape from the scene. In the grenade blast, Constable Sajjal Malakar sustained severe injuries.
Despite being critically wounded, he was evacuated to the hospital for medical treatment. However, his injuries proved fatal and Constable Sajjal Malakar was martyred while serving in the line of duty.

Constable Sajjal Malakar made the supreme sacrifice while carrying out his duty with 49 Battalion CRPF in Surankote. His martyrdom remains part of the proud history of the Central Reserve Police Force and its long record of service in Jammu and Kashmir.
He was one of the many CRPF personnel who served far from home, carrying out demanding duties in difficult circumstances. His service reflected the commitment of those who stood in harm's way to protect others and uphold their responsibility to the nation.
