On 28 September 1998, a mobile patrol of the 54 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force came under heavy fire from insurgents near Guwahati, Assam.
Constable and Driver Virender Singh was among the personnel at the front who sustained severe injuries during the encounter.
The troops retaliated and forced the attackers to flee. Despite sustaining serious injuries, the personnel continued fighting during the encounter.
Virender Singh later succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
