Craftsman Gopi Birlangi, a technician serving with Army Aviation, made the supreme sacrifice on 29 September 2006 in the crash of a Cheetah helicopter at Nashik, Maharashtra.
The helicopter had taken off from the Nashik Aviation Base on a routine training-flying mission. Craftsman Gopi Birlangi was the technician aboard the aircraft.
The Ministry of Defence identified the personnel aboard the helicopter as Major Rohit Yadav, Major S. Chakravarty and technician Craftsman Gopi Birlangi. All three made the supreme sacrifice in the accident. 9
The official release stated that the helicopter crashed at approximately 1407 hours at the Nashik Aviation Base. There was no damage to civil property and no individual on the ground was injured as a result of the crash. 10
Preliminary indicators suggested technical failure owing to rotor damage. The Ministry of Defence ordered an inquiry to investigate the reasons for the accident. 11
Craftsman Gopi Birlangi made the supreme sacrifice while carrying out his duties with Army Aviation.
