Gunner Prem Kumar Singh of 29 Rashtriya Rifles was serving in Jammu and Kashmir when a cordon was being established around a dispensary in Chaklu village, Baramulla district, on 24 September 1995.
At about 4:35 pm, terrorists threw grenades and opened heavy automatic fire on the troops. Gunner Prem Kumar Singh was severely wounded and was almost paralysed below the abdomen.
He Continued to Fight Despite Severe Wounds
Despite his injuries, he crawled into a firing position behind cover and retaliated with accurate and heavy automatic fire from his Light Machine Gun.
As he gradually lost consciousness, he continued engaging the terrorists with determination. His accurate and sustained fire pinned down the attackers and helped the troops establish an effective close cordon around the dispensary.
The operation resulted in the recovery of nine AK rifles and the elimination of ten terrorists, according to the official gallantry citation.
Gunner Prem Kumar Singh made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army. He was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously for his exceptional courage and self-sacrifice.
