Gunners’ Day: Two Centuries of Firepower, Precision and Service to the Nation
On its 200th Raising Day, the Regiment of Artillery honours generations of Gunners who have carried the Army’s firepower across battlefields.

From the roar of guns across difficult battlefields to the precision demanded by modern warfare, the story of the Indian Army’s Gunners is one of firepower, discipline and an enduring commitment to the mission.
On Gunners’ Day, the Indian Army extended greetings to serving personnel, veterans and families of the Regiment of Artillery, marking a significant milestone as the Regiment observes its 200th Raising Day.
Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth and all ranks of the Indian Army conveyed their greetings to the artillery fraternity, recognising the tradition, service and battlefield contribution of the Gunners.
A Legacy Built Across Generations
Artillery has long occupied a crucial place on the battlefield. Its role extends beyond the guns themselves, requiring accuracy, timing, coordination and the ability to deliver effective fire when the mission demands it.
Over generations, Gunners have served across different operational environments, adapting their methods and capabilities as the nature of warfare evolved.
The 200th Gunners’ Day is therefore also an occasion to remember the generations of soldiers who served the guns and helped build the traditions of the Regiment of Artillery.
From Firepower to Modern Warfare
The Regiment has evolved considerably from its early beginnings. Modern artillery increasingly combines conventional gun systems with advanced surveillance, target acquisition, communications and other technologies designed to improve battlefield effectiveness.
This transformation reflects the changing character of warfare, where speed, accuracy, information and coordination have become increasingly important.
Yet, despite the evolution of technology, the fundamental responsibility of the Gunner remains unchanged: providing effective fire support when required.
