On 25 September 1990, while returning from Battalion Headquarters at Quazigund to their company, two vehicles of A/53 Battalion found themselves in an ambush at around 1845 hours.
Terrorists were positioned behind a vegetable garden fence and opened fire on the vehicles. The driver of one of the vehicles, Constable and Driver Darshan Lal Dogra, was hit by bullets but continued driving through the ambush.
Inspector R. S. Upadhyay sustained bullet injuries during the attack. Despite being wounded, he continued fighting and encouraging his troops.
He was evacuated to the Intensive Care Unit of the Military Hospital in Srinagar. Inspector R. S. Upadhyay succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice on 26 September 1990 at 2210 hours.
His courage and leadership in the face of the ambush remain a testament to his devotion to duty.
