Lance Naik Sandeep Singh of 4 Para (Special Forces) was deployed in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district in September 2018. On 22 September, his team was tasked with tracking a group of heavily armed terrorists following an infiltration attempt near the Line of Control.
Serving as the leading scout of the team, Sandeep Singh tracked footprints and other signs that helped the team locate the terrorists in the difficult high-altitude terrain.
Fighting Forward Despite Severe Injuries
When the team came under intense fire, Lance Naik Sandeep Singh moved forward and engaged one of the terrorists at close range. He was grievously wounded by a grenade blast but refused to withdraw.
Despite his injuries, he crawled towards the enemy position and continued the fight. He engaged another terrorist at close range, enabling his comrades to continue the counter-operation.
During the fierce exchange of fire, Sandeep Singh sustained further injuries and fell into a gorge. He was evacuated from the high-altitude area, but made the supreme sacrifice on 24 September 2018.
For his exceptional courage, determination and devotion to duty, Lance Naik Sandeep Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
