Major Avinash Singh Bhadauria of 8 Rashtriya Rifles made the supreme sacrifice during a counter-terrorist operation in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, on 28 September 2001.

Major Bhadauria, an officer of the Madras Regiment, was serving with 8 Rashtriya Rifles in Jammu and Kashmir during Operation Rakshak.

On 28 September 2001, intelligence inputs indicated the presence of heavily armed terrorists in the area. Major Bhadauria led the operation to locate and engage them.

The troops moved towards the suspected hideout and established a cordon to prevent the terrorists from escaping. The operation developed into a close-range engagement.

Major Bhadauria personally led his men during the encounter and continued directing the operation despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

He ultimately succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice while leading his men against the terrorists.

For his courage, leadership and personal bravery during the operation, Major Avinash Singh Bhadauria was awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously.
