Major Ganesh Madappa of 36 Rashtriya Rifles made the supreme sacrifice on 27 September 1995 during a counter-insurgency operation in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Major Madappa was tasked to conduct a spot raid on a terrorist hideout at Village Bachhru in Budgam. At around 2030 hours, as his company column approached the hideout, terrorists opened fire from a house, injuring the leading scout.
Displaying leadership and presence of mind, Major Madappa immediately ordered his men to surround the house and personally moved to block its exit.
The terrorists attempted to break out of the house while firing at the security forces. Major Madappa engaged them at close range and sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the exchange.
Despite his critical injuries, he continued engaging the fleeing terrorists and continued the pursuit until he collapsed. He was evacuated but succumbed to his injuries at 2245 hours on 27 September 1995.
For his conspicuous gallantry, indomitable spirit and devotion to duty at the cost of his life, Major Ganesh Madappa was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
The supreme sacrifice of Major Ganesh Madappa remains part of the proud record of the Indian Army and Rashtriya Rifles.
