Major Rajiv Kumar Joon was a courageous officer of the Indian Army whose service reflected determination, leadership and devotion to duty. Born in Gadikhari village of Rohtak district, Haryana, he joined the Army and served with the 22 Grenadiers in Jammu and Kashmir during a period of intense counter-terrorism operations.
As an officer of the Grenadiers, Major Joon operated in difficult terrain where soldiers regularly faced armed terrorists in close-quarter engagements. His commitment to his men and his determination to lead from the front became defining qualities of his service.
The Operation at Arijan Dessar
On 16 September 1994, security forces launched a counter-terrorism operation at Arijan Dessar in Anantnag district after terrorists were located in a house. Major Rajiv Kumar Joon was part of the team tasked with dealing with the threat.
Two terrorists were hiding inside the house, including one positioned in a basement. Major Joon moved towards the building despite the danger and crawled forward to reach a position from where he could engage the terrorists.
He lobbed grenades into the position and engaged the terrorists at close range. During the action, he was grievously wounded. Despite his injuries, Major Joon continued fighting and directing his men.
He confronted the remaining terrorist at close quarters and continued firing until the threat was neutralised. His determination allowed the operation to be brought to its decisive conclusion, but the injuries he had sustained proved fatal.
The Final Sacrifice
Major Rajiv Kumar Joon made the supreme sacrifice on 16 September 1994. He had continued to fight despite being grievously wounded, placing the mission and the safety of his comrades above his own life.
His exceptional courage and devotion to duty were recognised with the Ashoka Chakra, posthumously. His name is also associated with the Shaurya Chakra, reflecting a record of distinguished courage in service.
Major Rajiv Kumar Joon remains remembered as a Braveheart who displayed extraordinary courage in one of the most demanding operational environments faced by the Indian Army. His final action at Arijan Dessar stands as a lasting example of determination, leadership and devotion to duty.
