A Leader of 19 Punjab
Major Ranbir Singh of 19 Punjab was a courageous officer who repeatedly led his men from the front during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. Born in Nangal village of Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, he was commissioned into 19 Punjab of the Punjab Regiment in December 1958.
During the early phase of the war, Major Ranbir Singh had already distinguished himself while leading a patrol in the Uri sector. On 21 September 1965, he was again ordered to capture an enemy-held objective in Jammu and Kashmir.
Leading From the Front
As Major Ranbir Singh's party approached the objective, it came under heavy enemy fire. He was wounded in both legs but continued to lead his men forward rather than withdraw.
Despite his injuries, Major Ranbir Singh pressed the assault. He was subsequently hit in the chest by enemy fire and made the supreme sacrifice. Inspired by his leadership, his men continued the attack and captured the objective along with automatic weapons and wireless equipment.
The Vir Chakra
Major Ranbir Singh was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously for his gallantry, resourcefulness and leadership during the operations. His conduct under fire reflected the tradition of leading from the front and placing the mission and his men above personal safety.
His name remains part of the proud wartime history of 19 Punjab and the soldiers who served in Jammu and Kashmir during the 1965 war.
