An Army Aviator
Major Rohit Kumar served with the Army Aviation Corps as part of 9 (Independent) Recce & Observation Flight. His duties involved flying reconnaissance and observation missions in support of troops operating in challenging terrain.
On 21 September 2021, Major Rohit Kumar was undertaking an operational sortie in a Cheetah helicopter in the Patnitop area of Jammu and Kashmir. The mission was being conducted in difficult mountainous terrain and weather conditions.
The Final Mission
During the mission, the helicopter encountered difficult conditions and crashed in the Patnitop area. Major Rohit Kumar and Major Anuj Rajput, who was also serving with the flight, could not survive the crash.
Major Rohit Kumar made the supreme sacrifice on 21 September 2021 while carrying out his operational duty. His final flight was part of the Army Aviation Corps' continuing role in supporting India's soldiers across the country's demanding operational environments.
A Soldier in the Sky
Major Rohit Kumar's sacrifice is remembered alongside that of Major Anuj Rajput, whose life was also lost in the same operational helicopter crash. Their service reflects the risks undertaken by Army aviators while carrying out missions in support of the force.
