Major Rohit Yadav of 98 Field Regiment made the supreme sacrifice on 29 September 2006 while serving with Army Aviation.
On that day, a Cheetah helicopter of Army Aviation crashed at the Nashik Aviation Base in Maharashtra at approximately 1407 hours.
The helicopter had become airborne from the Nashik Aviation Base and was undertaking a routine training-flying mission. Major Rohit Yadav was one of the two pilots aboard the aircraft.
The Ministry of Defence identified Major Rohit Yadav and Major S. Chakravarty as the two pilots and Craftsman Gopi Birlangi as the technician aboard the helicopter. All three made the supreme sacrifice in the crash.
The official account stated that both pilots had more than 450 hours of flying experience individually and were undergoing training as flying instructors at the Combat Aviation Training School at Nashik.
Preliminary indicators suggested technical failure owing to rotor damage. The Ministry of Defence ordered an inquiry to investigate the reasons for the accident.
