Major Shamsher Singh Manhas was serving with 4 Sikh during the Indo-Pak War of 1965, when Indian troops were engaged in fierce fighting in the Lahore sector. On 10 September 1965, his company was tasked with assaulting and capturing the village of Sucki, a position defended by the enemy and supported by fortified pillboxes.

As the assault began, the company came under intense enemy fire. Despite the fierce opposition and the danger faced by his men, Major Manhas continued to lead from the front. During the advance, he sustained injuries but remained with his troops and continued directing the assault.

Refusing to allow his injuries to deter him from his duty, Major Manhas pressed forward with determination. Under heavy enemy fire, he led his company towards the defended position and personally directed the attack against the enemy's fortified defences.
