Major Sourjya Chakrabarty of 19 Grenadiers made the supreme sacrifice on 29 September 2006 in the Army Aviation helicopter crash at Nashik, Maharashtra.
A Cheetah helicopter of Army Aviation had taken off from the Nashik Aviation Base on a routine training-flying mission. Major Sourjya Chakrabarty was one of the two pilots aboard the aircraft.
The Ministry of Defence identified the two pilots as Major Rohit Yadav and Major S. Chakravarty and the technician as Craftsman Gopi Birlangi. All three made the supreme sacrifice in the crash.
The official release stated that both pilots had individually accumulated more than 450 hours of flying experience and were undergoing training as flying instructors at the Combat Aviation Training School at Nashik.
Preliminary indicators pointed towards technical failure owing to rotor damage. An inquiry was ordered to investigate the reasons for the accident.
