Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar was a seasoned Junior Commissioned Officer of the Indian Army who devoted more than two decades of his life to military service. Hailing from Patra village in Sunderbani, Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, he carried the responsibilities of a soldier and a JCO with dedication and professionalism. His long years in uniform reflected an enduring commitment to the Army and the nation.
He served with the Dogra Regiment and was subsequently deployed with 11 Rashtriya Rifles in Jammu and Kashmir. Serving in a counter-terrorism formation demanded constant alertness, courage and the ability to operate in some of the most challenging terrain in the region. As an experienced JCO, Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar brought years of military experience to his responsibilities and remained committed to his comrades and his mission.
Beyond his service, Vipan Kumar was a husband and father. He was survived by his wife and two sons. His family endured the profound loss of a soldier who had spent much of his life serving the country, while his comrades remembered an experienced JCO who remained devoted to his responsibilities until his final operation.
Operation Shahpurshal: 13 September 2024
On 13 September 2024, security forces received intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the Chhatroo area of Kishtwar district. A joint operation involving 11 Rashtriya Rifles and the Jammu and Kashmir Police was launched to locate and engage the terrorists. Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar was part of the 11 Rashtriya Rifles team assigned to the operation.
The troops moved towards the suspected area in the Pingnal Dugadda forest in the upper reaches of the region. At approximately 3:30 pm, contact was established with the terrorists, who opened fire when challenged. A fierce exchange of fire followed in the difficult forested terrain.
During the intense engagement, Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar sustained severe injuries. He was evacuated along with other wounded personnel and taken towards Command Hospital, Udhampur, for medical treatment. Despite medical efforts, he ultimately made the supreme sacrifice on 13 September 2024.
His martyrdom was a profound loss to his family, his comrades and the Indian Army. He had devoted more than two decades to military service, and his final operation came while he was carrying out his responsibilities in the challenging mountains of Kishtwar. Sepoy Arvind Singh also made the supreme sacrifice during the same operation.
In recognition of his service and conduct during the operation, Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar was subsequently awarded a Mention-in-Despatches (Posthumous). The honour formally records his service and contribution during the operation as part of the Indian Army's recognition of personnel who have distinguished themselves through their service and actions.
Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar remains remembered as a Braveheart and an experienced soldier who devoted more than two decades to the service of India. His final operation in Kishtwar was another chapter in a life defined by duty, discipline and commitment to his comrades and the nation.
