Naik Hari Singh of the 1 Battalion, CRPF, made the supreme sacrifice while defending his post against a large hostile attack in Manipur on 27 September 1966.

The battalion was deployed in Manipur to maintain law and order and tackle insurgent elements. Naik Hari Singh was posted at Nungbi Khoni in the Ukhrul Sub-division.

The post came under attack by a large number of hostiles. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the CRPF personnel stood their ground and successfully repulsed the attack.

Naik Hari Singh commanded his section, directed the fire of his men and helped operate a G.F. rifle during the engagement.

A bullet struck him in the head, causing instant martyrdom.

Naik Hari Singh was awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously in recognition of his courage and sacrifice.

His martyrdom remains part of the early history of CRPF service in the challenging conditions of Manipur.
